In 1996, a group of enthusiastic friends started with seven stables, with more being added every year. Most nativity scenes are still made by participants themselves, such as that of Peter Verwoerd from Oude Oosterhei. Last year he walked the route with his grandchildren and became enthusiastic. “I found figures on an American site, and I thought: I can make those too.”
