Film fans know only too well that the Federal Inspection Office for Media Harmful to Young Persons (BPjM) has repeatedly overshot the mark in the past when it comes to indexing. An example of this is the horror film Nightbreed, which only 25 years on the index stood, only to be allowed to find its way into our home cinemas with a release from the age of 16.

After being attacked by one of these creatures, Boone manages to escape. However, he runs into Decker and a group of cops who gun him down. However, Boone survives the creature’s bite and returns to Midian, where he joins the Nightbreed. But Decker still has Boone in his sights, and a bitter fight for Midian soon ensues…
Nightbreed was for at the time several Saturn awards nominated and won the award for Best DVD/BD Special Edition for the Director’s Cut. Entertainment Weekly editor Ty Burr described the horror flick as “perverted” at the time because the supposed monster race was “the good guys” – an unusual approach to the nightmarish plot.
Meanwhile, Nightbreed was one of the first horror films to go explicit related to queer issues and as an allegory of human intolerance towards what is perceived as alien or different: despite an underwhelming theatrical release, the film garnered a loyal fan base that eventually helped it achieve cult status.
