Peru partially closes Machu Picchu to tourists after it was discovered that parts of the rock structure on which the Inca city rests have eroded.

With its upwards of 3,800 visitors per day, Machu Picchu is the biggest tourist attraction in Peru. But the extensive human ruljangs means that the place has been damaged, according to the Ministry of Culture, which decided on the closure.

– The damage is irreversible. We must protect our heritage, says Maritza Rosa Candia from the ministry.
