Perth County Paramedic Services recruiting 10 new part time primary care paramedics

Perth County Paramedic Services is looking to recruit 10 new part-time primary care paramedics as part of its annual drive to help fill positions that become vacant over the preceding year.

According to a job posting on Perth County’s website, a primary-care paramedic is responsible for responding to requests for service and delivering medical care to victims of accidents or illnesses, ensuring safe transportation to hospital or other receiving medical facilities, and assisting with the ongoing care of patient in hospital as required. The job posting is open until Jan. 23.

“Essentially, there’s a multi-stage recruitment process which involves an application with cover letter and resume, along with some qualifying questions, (and) then it moves into a stage with a written exam, then it moves to an interview stage … and then job offers will be sent out to successful candidates. … The new paramedics would then go through an orientation process in class that will run up to 10 days in length, and then following that they will have the opportunity to do orientation ride-outs where they ride along with an already established, certified crew, ” Perth County Paramedic Services assistant deputy chief of performance and operations Tristan Barter said.

Qualified candidates must either be certified as a primary-care paramedic or be a student who will be writing their provincial certification exam this year. While these part-time paramedics are being hired to fill vacancies due to retirements or paramedics moving to other services, Barter said the there will be ample opportunity for advancement.

“We have different opportunities internally. … So these people would be hired as part-time paramedics … but when positions open up within the service, say someone who works in the mobile integrated health and community paramedicine team retires or decides they don’t want to do it anymore, that creates a vacancy where a (part-time primary care) paramedic can apply to go into that team,” Barter said.

In addition to the community paramedicine team, opportunities for advancement within the service include field-training paramedic or acting commander. Visit www.perthcounty.ca/en/living-here/paramedic-services.aspx to learn more.
