Perth County OPP briefs: Busy long weekend for Perth County officers

Perth County OPP officers were kept busy during the recent Civic Holiday long weekend.

A traffic campaign that targeted the “Big 4” causal factors of serious collisions on OPP-patrolled roads and highways – impaired driving, distracted driving, aggressive driving and failing to wear a seatbelt – resulted in more than 250 charges.

The bulk of the charges – 195 – were for speeding, but officers also laid three seatbelt charges, four stunt-driving charges and two impaired driving charges.

During the campaign, local officers also investigated six motor-vehicle collisions on Perth County roads. Only one of the crashes resulted in minor injuries.

Motorists are being encouraged to embrace safe road behaviors that align with the OPP’s traffic safety campaign theme of “Safer You. Safer Me.”

Collision results in charge

A St. Jacobs driver was charged with careless driving after a three-vehicle collision in Perth East Township.

Police reported that a chain-reaction collision occurred on Wellington Road 86 Aug. 6 when a vehicle struck a slowing vehicle that, in turn, struck a third vehicle that was in the process of making a turn.

No injuries were reported, but a 28-year-old motorist was issued a ticket for careless driving.

Car stolen in North Perth

The Perth County OPP is investigating after a North Perth resident discovered their car had been stolen from their driveway.

Police said the Malcolm Crescent resident reported the theft of the silver 2010 Chevrolet Impala Sunday morning after realizing the car had been taken some time overnight.

Woman charged with assaulting police officer

A 43-year-old North Perth woman was charged with assaulting a police officer after reports of a disturbance during the recent long weekend.

On Saturday evening, Perth County OPP officers responded to the reports of a disturbance at an Elizabeth Street East address. During this response, an officer alleged suffered minor injuries, police said.

The suspect, a 43-year-old woman, was charged and is scheduled to appear in a Stratford courtroom in early October to answer the charge.

license suspensions

Two visitors left Perth County with three-day alcohol-related driver’s license suspensions after the recent Civic Holiday long weekend.

The first visitor, a 35-year-old from Elmira, was pulled over on Albert Avenue North in North Perth early Sunday morning after an officer reportedly noticed the vehicle was being driven without its headlights on.

After speaking with the driver, an officer employed a roadside screening device that resulted in the three day license suspension. The motorist was also ticketed for being a novice driver with a blood alcohol count above zero.

The second visitor, a 31-year-old Bracebridge resident, was pulled over early Monday morning after failing to stop for a top sign on Road 168 in West Perth, police said.

After the driver reportedly admitted to having a drink, an officer administered a roadside screening device that resulted in the driver’s license suspension. in addition to the suspension, the driver received tickets for disobeying a stop sign, driving a vehicle with no currently validated permit and driving a vehicle with an open container of liquor.

Stolen pickup truck

The Perth County OPP are investigating after a pickup truck was reported stolen from a North Perth home.

Officers responded Friday after reports that unknown suspects had stolen a black 2016 Chevrolet Silverado some time overnight from the Line 86 home.
