When a man applied for a visa at the Swedish consulate in Izmir, Turkey, he suddenly attacked the staff.
A woman has been shot – and is being treated for serious injuries, according to information to Habertürk.

A Turkish citizen has been shot in an attack on the Swedish consulate in Izmir, Turkey, several Turkish media reports. The person belonged to the staff, reports Habertürk.

Now the Foreign Ministry confirms the attack.

“The Foreign Ministry can confirm the incident and is in close dialogue with the Consulate General in Istanbul and our staff there,” writes the Foreign Ministry’s press service to TV4 Nyheterna.

Sweden’s consul general will travel to Izmir tomorrow to inform himself of the situation and express his participation.

“Our thoughts go out to the victim and her family.”

The Foreign Ministry does not want to comment on the threat picture that exists against the foreign representation or what security measures will be taken.

Woman was seriously injured

The attack happened at lunchtime.

The suspected perpetrator must have applied for a visa at the consulate. When he didn’t get the answer he wanted from the female staff member, he pulled out a gun and shot her.

The woman is said to be seriously injured and is being cared for in the intensive care unit. According to the newspaper, she was injured in the chest and leg.

The perpetrator has been arrested and the weapon has been confiscated, writes Habertürk.
