Pernilla Wiberg reconciled with her rival.
Shortly afterwards, Ulrike Maier died in a tragic accident.
When the alpine icon tells about it all, the participants in Superstars can’t hold back the tears.
– It is so incredibly unpleasant, says “Pillan”.
Ulrike Maier only had time to compete in two Olympics, and during her career there were a total of three WC medals, two of which were gold. But she would only be 26 years old. Maier was one of alpine skiing’s big profiles, with a total of nine seasons in the World Cup behind him, where there had been a total of 21 podium places. But the career, and life, suddenly ended during a competition.
The words about the tragedy
Maier was only 26 years old when the accident happened. During the Garmisch-Partenkirchen downhill, Maier suddenly fell at high speed. She broke her neck, and her life could not be saved. At the time, Pernilla Wiberg was one of the greats of the alpine world, and she had had a frosty relationship with Maier before the competition in Germany.
In the new season of “Superstars”, where Wiberg is one of the participants, she talks about the relationship, and how it got better out of nowhere, the same weekend that Maier tragically lost his life.
– We had a very strange relationship with each other until the competition in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 1994 when we managed to get into the same cabin up the mountain. Then she suddenly started talking. It had been a bit of a hard and stiff feeling before that, she says in the program according to Expressen, and continues:
– It was so very nice, so very liberating. It had been smoldering and the feeling was that it was a person who was not particularly nice at all.
No one is left untouched
Pernilla Wiberg believes that it was fate that she and Maier managed to become friends before the tragic event.
– It is so incredibly unpleasant. I thought about it afterwards and it was probably meant for us to sort it out, says “Pillan” Wiberg.
Wiberg has previously said that she herself felt afraid to ride the competition, which later had such a tragic outcome. When she tells, several of the other participants, including Johanna Ojala, are close to tears.
– It affected everyone quite a lot. At the same time, you know that it is a high-risk sport. I love speed, says Wiberg.
