Per Ledin’s new life in hockey after his successful SHL career

On the ice, he was known as a raw-beaked bully who used any means to win.
Today, Per Ledin is working on putting players there who play the same way he did.

– I get to contribute with my experience where I’ve basically been in every nook and cranny and done everything stupid you can do on the ice, he tells Expressen about his work.

He has won SC gold with both Färjestad and HV71, won the CHL with Luleå and coined the now-legendary fallacy “… soon the rat is full”. Despite his great success in several different clubs, Per Ledin46, never much liked as a player. It was because he was more often than not a pig on the ice.

Changed the ring corner

He was one of the league’s big profiles when he played. Sure he made his points, but he was best known as a foul-mouthed trash talker who walked over corpses to win matches. The opponents loathed him, the crowd hated him. When he put his skates on the shelf in 2019, many probably thought it was nice to get rid of him. But it wasn’t that easy…

For two years now, Per Ledin has been one of the four members of the SHL’s reference group, which is now called the Player Safety Group. Together with Christopher Norgren, Peter Andersson and Michael Sundlöv he is responsible for making decisions about which situations and events in the SHL and the Hockey Allsvenskan should be reported to the Swedish Ice Hockey Association’s disciplinary committee.

He thus goes from having himself been a rawhide during his career to pointing out and reporting similar player types as he himself was. It’s an unexpected step, to say the least. In any case, Per Ledin is satisfied with the transition.

– We are a good team where we have different experiences and areas of expertise. It’s great fun. I get to contribute with my experience where I’ve basically been in every nook and cranny and done everything stupid you can do on the ice. I find it quite easy to see what a player’s intentions are on the ice. But together we are a good group that contributes with different things, he tells Expressen.

Is also a junior coach

On the side of the job within the Player Safety Group, Per Ledin is the junior team coach for Sunderby SK’s J18 team. For the past three years, he has led the team from the village cave outside Luleå. There he coaches guys who have been rejected by other elite clubs nearby (Skellefteå, Luleå, Björklöven). He likes to train and develop young people and he is driven to learn more about leadership.

– It’s very fun. This is a good level for me, to find myself and what kind of leadership I want to stand for. Maybe not everyone has the drive to become an NHL pro, either. But they think it’s fun to play hockey. In juniors, there are many other factors to consider. You have to understand that some may not have even eaten before training or may not have had a ride to the ice rink that day, he says.

He has been involved in local children’s and youth sports for a couple of years. Maybe it will attract him in the future to try coaching a senior team?

– Eventually, it would be fun to stand higher up and see what you can do. Now all the children have moved out and it’s just me and my wife left, so it’s a bit quiet. But everything has its time. Now the focus is on Sunderby Sportklubb and that we should take the next step, says Ledin.

Nice to hear how it’s going for one of the Elitserie’s biggest profiles ever.
