PRO critical to the high cost protection

Some who have previously been critical of the decision are the Pensioners’ National Organization, PRO. After the government’s budget proposal presented in September 2024, the increase was reported for the first time. News24 then reported on PRO’s criticism of the decision, which is expected to hit the country’s elderly hard.

– We see a clear risk that the elderly will be hit hard by the increase in high-cost protection. Drug use is highest among the elderly and women, which makes these groups particularly vulnerable. Many elderly people have limited financial resources and the increased cost may force them to forgo necessary medication, which worsens their health and risks increasing healthcare costs in the long term, said PRO’s federal secretary at the time Christine Cars-Ingelsto Nyheter24.

Several are critical of the government’s proposal

Now the newspaper reports The senior because it is not only PROs that are critical. The SPF Seniors are preparing their own referral, which will be sent to the government by February 17 at the latest, in which views on the proposal appear.

The newspaper writes that several regions have already sent in their referrals, where it has also been established that several are critical of increased high-cost protection. The government’s proposal, which includes an increase in the high-cost protection of SEK 900, arouses many emotions and strong opinions.

“An increased drug cost for the individual will hit people with already small financial margins the hardest. That group is often also characterized by old age, multiple and co-morbidities and high medication use,” writes Region Gävleborg in its referral, according to Senioren.
