Every year thousands of people retire. According to the regulations that apply now, you can withdraw your state pension from the month you turn 63 at the earliest. However, between 2026-2029, the new standard age for drawing the national pension will be applied, which is 67 years.
More took their pension at age 66 in 2023
In 2023, the average age for drawing the national pension was 66, which was an increase of 1.2 years compared to the previous year. In 2022, the average retirement age was 64.8 years.
– Our report shows an increase in the average retirement age that is unusually strong. The reason for the large increase is the three increased age limits that affect when you can start drawing your pension, says the Pensions Authority’s analyst Alma Masic in a press release.

The background to why more people choose to take out their pension at an older age is, according to the Pensions Authority, the three pension-related age limits that were raised in 2023. However, according to their forecast, the increase is expected to moderate in 2024. The reason is believed to be that the youngest cohort who can take out a public pension then are 63-year-olds.
Those born in 1961 could not withdraw the general pension part during the previous year, but instead had to wait for the new year. This, the authority believes, is the basis for the fact that more and more 63-year-olds will request the pension in 2024, which affects the retirement age in a downward direction instead.
– Those who are part of the cohort born in 1961 had perhaps intended to draw a pension at the age of 62, but now had to wait until the age of 63 for their pension draw. This means that we will very likely see an increased pension withdrawal at the age of 63 in 2024, which will reduce the average retirement age, says Masic, adding:
– We have estimated that the retirement age falls to around 65.6 years, based on behaviors we saw at the last retirement age increase in 2021.
