Pensioner? Then you must submit the important certificate

Pensioner Then you must submit the important certificate

Every year, thousands of Swedes retire after a long working life. While some want to enjoy life after working for a long time, others want to extend their retirement and continue to work by becoming so-called job bonaires.

Of those who choose to stop working completely, there are also those who choose to settle abroad. Among Swedish pensioners, there are hundreds of thousands who have chosen to settle in another country.

Then you are not covered by guaranteed pension

It is important to keep in mind if you are one of those who are thinking of settling elsewhere in the fall of old age, that not all pension parts are paid out.

In a judgment in the European Court of Justice from 2017, it was judged that those born in 1938 or later are not entitled to guaranteed pension as it is categorized as a minimum benefit. And such are only paid out to those who reside in the country where the benefit is granted.

However, you keep the part of the public pension that you yourself have earned in your working life. It can then be income premium and supplementary pension.

Perhaps you are one of those who live abroad or even think about moving abroad once the pension has started.

Then there are other important things you should also know, in addition to how the pension changes.

In an interview with News24 explaining Dan Adolphson Björckpension economist at minPension, that you who are a pensioner and no longer live in Sweden need to send a certificate of living to the Pensions Agency.

It is sent to everyone who receives a pension from the authority or compensation from Försäkringskassan. Every year the certificate needs to be signed and submitted for the money to continue to be paid out.

– When a person dies in Sweden, the Swedish Tax Agency registers the death in the population register and the Pensions Authority and the pension companies are notified automatically. The life certificates for foreign residents exist to avoid pensions being sent to deceased persons, he says.

Adolphson Björck also explains why it is so important that you fill in the certificate. Otherwise, the risk may be that you simply stop getting the money paid out.

– If you, as a foreign resident, do not fill in the life certificate, the monthly pension payments will be temporarily blocked. When the money stops coming, you usually come in with the required document.

It may also happen that authorities and pension companies do their own research as there is an exchange of information with other countries regarding pension savings and public registers. Therefore, it is important that each individual takes personal responsibility for the certificate being signed, explains Adolphson Björck.

– Quite often it’s about having incomplete information or that the recipient simply hasn’t received the life certificate. There is an exchange of information with other countries and they also try to get in touch with pension savers in various public registers. At the same time, there are limits to which resources you can put down. It is not a question of knocking on doors on the other side of the globe, he tells Nyheter24 and adds:

– As a foreign resident with a Swedish pension payment, you have your own responsibility to inform the Swedish Tax Agency of where you live and to notify if you change your address. The pension authority and the pension companies will then be notified of this. Once the certificate is received, the payment block is lifted.

However, there are exceptions to when you do not need to fill in the certificate of residence. If you are retired and live abroad but are registered in Sweden, you are not covered by the requirement. Then the pension is instead paid to your Swedish bank, even if you stay abroad for periods.
