The top teams of the Women’s Basketball League met on Wednesday in Kotka. Peli-Karhut won against last season’s final opponent Torpan Poj.
Kotka’s Peli-Karhut defeated the Helsinki team Torpa Pojat in the women’s Korisliiga top fight with a score of 86–61.
The Kotka players started the match strongly and dominated the game at both ends of the field. The home team led 24–12 after the first period, and by halftime the difference had already accumulated to 26 points. The second half progressed steadily, and Peli-Karhut kept its lead.
Game Bears Linda-Lotta Lehtoranta was close to triple-double. The back player of the women’s national team finished with 17 points, 9 rebounds and 9 assists. American player Lauren Heard scored 20 points for the home team.
ToPo’s point leader was chosen as the player of the month for October Carmen Tyson-Thomaswho posted a double-double by scoring 17 points and grabbing 16 rebounds.
PeKa caused the people of Helsinki their first loss of the season. Kotka players now lead the series with six wins and one loss.
ToPo, who played one match less, dropped to second place in the league table.
Last season, the teams met in the Korisliiga finals, when ToPo took the Finnish championship with a 3–0 match win.
In the second match on Wednesday evening, the league champion BC Nokia lost to Tapiola Honga on their home court after overtime 79–82. Hongan was the strongest scorer of the match Cierra Walkerwho finished with 22 points.
