Pekka Haavisto: “Finland’s line has not changed”

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

Finland is adamant that Sweden and Finland should become NATO members at the same time.

– Finland’s line has not changed, says the Finnish foreign minister.

Haavisto held a press conference on Monday, the day after Turkish President Erdogan hinted that Turkey might say yes to Finland’s NATO membership alone.

Haavisto states that he spoke with his Turkish colleague after Erdogan’s outburst, but also with Sweden’s Foreign Minister Tobias Billström (M) and with NATO.

The conversation with Billström was mostly about informing Sweden about the contacts Finland had with Turkey.

Haavisto still hopes that the two Nordic countries can become NATO members at the NATO summit in Vilnius in July.

– Our strong desire is still to progress together with Sweden in our NATO process. Sweden is Finland’s closest neighbor in security policy, says Haavisto.
