“Climate change is not good, but it has actually turned a bit for the better for the pears,” Gerritsen explains. “Because of the sun, more sugars enter the fruit, so fruit has started to taste better over the years. But in southern Europe, for example, where a lot of pears are traditionally grown, it gets too dry and hot, almost nothing grows there more. We are slowly losing the competition there.”
