When we say New Year, we all think of perfectly prepared tables. Although we try to be careful at the New Year’s table, sometimes the end of the rope can escape. So what can we do to prevent this? “Having an evening getaway because of the New Year’s table and meals does not mean finishing everything in the name of healthy eating. But if you have a chronic disease, cheating can put your health at risk,” says Acıbadem Ankara Hospital Nutrition and Diet Specialist Renan Güneş: “Therefore, those who have diabetes, blood pressure problems, heart and kidney diseases, or those who constantly use drugs due to their diseases or take special diets. Be careful if there are situations that require it. In such cases, even one day’s nutritional mistakes can cause you to experience significant problems.

ATTENTION TO THESE AT THE NEW YEAR!

Dietitian Renan Güneş, who says, “Try not to sit down too hungry to eat,” lists other nutritional suggestions for New Year’s Day as follows;

  • Make food choices that make you feel good.

  • Try to have snacks throughout the day.

  • Start your meal with light starters such as olive oil and salad before the meal.

  • Turkey would be a good choice as meat for New Year’s Eve, but instead you can choose white meat such as chicken or fish.

  • As a carbohydrate, you can choose one of rice, soup or bread.

  • For dessert, you can prefer milky or fruity desserts instead of high-fat fried sugar and high-calorie desserts.

  • It is useful to be careful when consuming nuts, which are indispensable for the New Year. Since both the calorie and the roasted ones have a high salt content, the raw ones should be preferred and no more than a small bowl should be consumed.

  • You can snack on fresh vegetables and fruits in order not to take in more calories after the meal as it will continue at night.

  • Be careful if you are going to consume alcohol. Remember that 1 gram of alcohol has 7 calories. Try to limit alcohol consumption as well. Take care to consume it with meals so that it does not create an imbalance in your blood sugar while drinking alcohol. While drinking alcohol, try not to consume excessively fatty foods and drink slowly to spread it into the night.

  • Set your own limits and learn to say no.

  • Try to increase your water consumption.

NUTRITIONAL TIPS FOR THE FIRST DAY OF THE NEW YEAR

If you missed a lot on New Year’s Eve, pay special attention to your diet the next day. Dietitian Renan Güneş, who said that it is necessary to start the day with a light breakfast on New Year’s Eve, said, “Reduce your tea and coffee consumption by staying away from caffeinated drinks as much as possible. In this context, herbal teas such as green tea, white tea, rosemary and thyme will help relieve your edema. At the same time, be careful to consume plenty of water in order to remove alcohol from the body for a few days, as alcohol will retain water in the body and cause edema. Drawing attention to the importance of light snacks, Güneş said, “A rich vegetable soup that you will prepare will remove toxins from your body, keep you full and help relieve your edema. Try to eat foods that contain more potassium. Taking more potassium ensures that excess sodium is removed from the body. Thus, it reduces edema. If possible, try to walk at a light pace the next day and for a few days afterward.”
