Paul Hansen describes the war in Ukraine: “The heart breaks”

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

Journalist and DN photographer Paul Hansen has won several major international awards for his images from conflict areas around the world. In February, he won a prize for his depiction of wartime Ukraine, and earlier this week it was clear that this year he will win the heavy American National Press Photographer Association first prize in the feature category, which also depicts the Ukraine war, but on home soil.

Jenny: Will the camera be a protection for you?
— No, what happens affects me inside too… But I have a reason to be there with the camera – to convey what I see and then I can stand there. If I hadn’t had a reason to be there, my heart would have burst on the spot – but it still does, says Paul Hansen, photographer and journalist.

“A huge human slaughter”
He is visibly moved when he talks about the situation in Ukraine.

— It is a huge slaughter of soldiers and the soldiers come from all over the country. It’s really heartbreaking, he says in Nyhetsmorgon.
