Columbus Blue Jackets’ Finnish player Patrik Laine applied for the NHL players’ support program. He shared the reason for his decision on social media.

– After careful consideration and discussions with the team and my support network, I have realized that I have to put my mental health and well-being first, Laine wrote.

– Ice hockey has been my passion and my life, but in order to be able to play at my best level, I have to take time for myself.

Laine has played 18 matches this season and scored 6+3 power points. The winger has represented Columbus since 2020 and scored 138 points in 174 matches.

In terms of power points, Laine’s best season is his second NHL season in Winnipeg, when he scored 44 goals and collected 26 points.

Laine did not give a more detailed schedule for his process. He thanked the club community for their understanding.

Players participating in the support program are paid as usual. For example, players suffering from various addictions or mental health problems have been referred to the support program of the NHL and the players’ association.

Laine’s season has been bumpy as he suffered a collarbone injury on December 14th against Toronto. He returned to team practice on January 19. The head coach Pascal Vincent revealed before Sunday’s game in Vancouver that Laine’s collarbone injury has come back and he can’t play yet.
