One patient contacted the healthcare system but was advised to wait. He later died after suffering a stroke.
Region Västmanland reports the incident to the Inspectorate for Care and Care (Ivo) and notes that the healthcare system made the wrong assessment.
Just hours before, the patient had been discharged after suffering a TIA (transient ischemic attack), or so-called mini-stroke. But the situation got worse and the patient had difficulty finding words.
But the advice from the medical service was to wait and the following morning the camp was even worse. The patient was then referred to the emergency department and further to the university hospital for neurosurgical care.
The patient then had a stroke, became weak in one half of the body and later died of complications.
The incident is assessed as a serious medical injury and even if it cannot be determined that the late treatment contributed to the patient’s death, the prognosis would have been better if the patient had received treatment immediately.
The incident is reported according to lex Maria and the hospital has put in place training measures to reduce the risk of similar cases.
