Patient in Västerbotten was operated on by mistake – gallbladder had already been removed

The patient came to an emergency department in the county with abdominal pain, but due to dementia and memory problems, the person could not tell about his medical history.

Decision by surgeon

After a while, the medical staff suspected inflammation in the gallbladder and gallstones in one of the bile ducts. A surgeon made the assessment that the gallbladder would need to be operated on.

During the operation, camera-assisted peephole surgery was used to inspect the abdomen – but no gallbladder was found. Instead, a suspicious cyst was discovered on the liver and the operation was terminated.

Was operated on – 70 years earlier

Older medical records then showed that the gall bladder had been surgically removed almost 70 years earlier. According to the available medical records, which staff saw before the procedure, the person had not undergone any abdominal surgery before.

After the operation, the patient was doing well under the circumstances and was able to be discharged from the hospital.
