The development of Path of Exile has only progressed slowly in the past few months, now one of the most important developers is leaving the studio.
What about Path of Exile? Path of Exile is in a crisis. Since the start of the Settlers League at the end of July 2024, there has been no new content for the ARPG. The reason for this lies in the successor POE2. Contrary to the promises of the bosses, the developers of the studio were deducted from the classic and placed on the development of Path of Exile 2.
After the predecessor’s players had continued to complain, the boss of Grinding Gear Games admitted that the promise was really broken and the resources currently needed for POE2. The community pulled into the strike and managed to ensure that at least some developers POE1 provided new content again. This resulted in the event league “Legacy of Phrecia”, which is supposed to recover the game with 19 fresh sub-classes.
Although the new league is well received after the dry spell, the right updates for POE1 are still missing. In addition, the new event league ends after a month, probably in favor of Path of Exile 2, because for this period the start of update 0.2.0 has long been announced, which has a new season and maybe even new class. The next setback now follows for the players of the predecessor: the company has left a prominent face.

The team leaves studio founders
Who left the company? The co -founder of Grinding Gear Games Chris Wilson has left the company as shown (via Companiesoffice.Govt.nz). According to the entry, he was deleted as a director. Grinding Gear Games was founded in 2006 by Chris Wilson, Jonathan Rogers and Erik Olofsson.
Olofsson was eliminated a few years ago, while Chris Wilson was something like his face to the game for the Path of Exile 1 players. He appeared in several update videos, forum posts and reddit posts. Wilson’s departure means a big loss for the players, because many saw him as the most important creator of their favorite game (via Reddit).
Why does he leave the company? The exact reasons for his departure are unknown, but Chris Wilson appeared and less often appeared in the past and recently no longer worked. Already over a year ago, users asked Reddit whether he was eliminated as a director after a similar message was published by the New Zealand “Companies Office”.
With his last message on Reddit, he denied his resignation, but has not appeared since then. Grinding Gear Games, the studio behind Path of Exile and his successor, was bought by Tencent in 2018. In 2024 Tencent also took over the last shares of the studio and now has complete control over Path of Exile (via Companiesoffice.govt.nz).
It remains to be seen whether there is more behind the paralyzed development of Path of Exile 1 or whether there will soon be a full -fledged new season for Path of Exile 1 after the successor update 0.2.0. Path of Exile 2 players have now played through and dare experiments, for example, how quickly a character can become: player builds the fastest character in Path of Exile 2, it makes it unplayable
