Path of Exile guild discovers an exploit in Settlers of Kalguur and is illicitly rich 250 instances later

After the release of the “Settlers of Kalguur” update for Path of Exile, a guild accidentally discovered an exploit that allowed them to earn an incredible number of “Divine Orbs” in a very short period of time.

What kind of exploit was that? Last night, July 29, 2024, the developers of Grinding Gear Games announced on the official Path of Exile website (via pathofexile.com) that they had become aware of an economic abuse.

Apparently, it was possible to earn a large amount of Divine Orbs in a very short time using “scrying” and a certain scarab. When investigating the exploit, the developers noticed a group of four players who all belonged to the same guild and who had used around 250 instances with this combination to specifically farm the divine orbs.

What do “Divine Orbs” do? Spheres are a valuable in-game currency that plays a major role in the economy of Path of Exile. They are used, for example, for trading valuable items between two players. Divine Orbs can also be used to re-roll the modifier values on items.

Ban or no ban?

How did the developers react to the exploit? Grinding Gear Games officials have locked the wealth generated from using the exploit to prevent it from entering the economy. In addition, a hotfix landed on the live servers overnight to close the associated loophole.

It has not yet been decided what will happen to the exploit users, i.e. whether there will be bans or other measures. As soon as a specific response has been agreed upon, there will be another update.

What does the community say about the report? Many players in the post expressed their happiness that the error was discovered and fixed so quickly. Numerous commentators are now calling for the exploit users to be banned. Others argue that the players simply used available content very efficiently.

Incidentally, “Settlers of Kalguur” was the first major content update to be released simultaneously for the PC and console versions of Path of Exile. And despite some technical problems, the launch was a success: Diablo 4’s big rival shines with update – Path of Exile has never had more players on Steam
