– Smoke started coming into our cabin and then the alarm went off. My husband said, “We’re running!” and everyone started running… everyone was crying. Children, old and grown men, says Aista, who was with her family on board the Stena Scandica when the ferry started burning. It was at lunchtime on Monday that a fire was discovered in a refrigerated container on a truck on a car deck, which led to the ship being without power. It was when the ship lost power and began drifting towards land that the situation became acute. It was a long night out at sea with storms, fear and a long wait for the roughly 200 people who remained on the fire-ravaged ferry. 32 of the passengers had time to evacuate before personnel got two of the boat’s main engines up and could drive to Nynäshamn on their own engine.
