Passenger ferry in flames – all 120 rescued

On Sunday morning, a ferry caught fire en route from the province of Siquijor to Bohol in the central Philippines. The Coast Guard was dispatched to rescue people and try to bring the fire under control.

Later in the day, the Coast Guard announced that all 120 passengers on board had been rescued.

“Everyone aboard the ferry is safe,” Coast Guard spokeswoman Joy Gumatay said in a statement.

Frequent storms, lack of ship maintenance or overloaded vessels mean that accidents at sea in the Philippines are not uncommon.
