The Togolese Parliament voted on Tuesday to extend the state of emergency for 12 months in the savannah region. It has been in force in the area since June 2022. This measure will strengthen the presence of the authority in this region plagued by incursions by armed men.

It’s the second time that the deputies of Togo carry out the renewal of the state of emergency in the savannah region. Located in the far north of the country, the area has been the subject of regular incursions by armed men since November 2021.

According to parliamentarians, this state of emergency aims to maintain the vigilance of the populations, put the defense and security forces in the best possible conditions and adapt the fight against armed groups according to the evolution of the situation. The other security objective of this decision is to allow people to vote in peace during the legislative and regional elections scheduled for April 20.

The government will use this legal instrument wisely to strengthen and guarantee a healthy, favorable security climate throughout the territory for the holding of a peaceful and secure election for all. “, affirmed the Minister of Territorial Administration, Colonel Hadabalo Awate, before the deputies while armed attacks have persisted in the savannah region since November 2021.
