Parisians supported steep increases in parking prices for SUVs –

The plan for the core of Paris does not concern the locals. According to the mayor, the new prices will come into effect at the beginning of September.

Yesterday, Sunday, Parisians voted in favor of a proposal according to which parking fees for SUVs in the city center will be significantly increased. The increase would not apply to locals.

According to the proposal, SUV parking in the heart of central Paris would cost 18 euros per hour for the first two hours. For smaller cars, the parking fee would be six euros per hour.

Six-hour parking for an SUV would rise to 225 euros, while smaller ones could get in for 75 euros.

The mayor of the city Anne Hidalgo according to the new fees will come into effect at the beginning of September.

He described the voting result as “a clear choice from the Parisians”, says France 24.

However, the vote on parking fees did not really attract voters. Only 5.7 percent of the 1.3 million eligible voters cast their votes. More than 54 percent of those who voted supported more expensive parking fees.

The vote asked whether the voter supports or opposes the creation of special parking fees in the city for heavy, bulky and polluting cars.

Parking prices for SUVs are also rising around the city core. The price increases do not apply to, for example, taxis, people with reduced mobility or fully electric cars – except if they weigh more than 2,000 kilograms. For hybrids, the weight limit is 1,600 kilograms.

The mayor of Paris, Hidalgo, has been trying to make Paris greener and more pleasant for cyclists and pedestrians for years.

Last year, Parisians voted to ban street electric scooters. At that time, almost 90 percent of over one hundred thousand voters supported the ban.
