The electric scooters quickly became popular and almost as quickly criticized.
Paris has gradually introduced tighter restrictions around the e-scooters, but in January Mayor Anne Hidalgo announced that Parisians will be able to decide for themselves whether the rental will be allowed to continue.
Ban after referendum
Close to 90 percent of residents voted for a ban. The vote is not binding, but Socialist Hidalgo has promised to follow the outcome of the referendum.
Several large French cities are expected to address the issue of banning the rental of electric scooters.
