Two cyclists flew overboard into the stands at the London Velodrome at a Champions League event.
The Brit who won Olympic gold in the track cycling team sprint in Paris last summer Katy Marchand had a terrible accident.
It was about the International Cycling Federation’s Track Champions League, i.e. the event of the Champions League of track cycling, which was contested in London.
Marchant and German Alessa-Catriona Pröpster caught up with each other, to the edge of the track and flew over it into the stands. The British Sports Federation says that the event’s doctors treated both cyclists and four spectators.
The others were not seriously injured, but Marchand broke two bones in his arm and also dislocated two fingers.
– Katy is in a good mood and her medical team is taking good care of her. We wish him a full and speedy recovery, British Cycling announced.
The same velodrome saw a similar accident at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, when England’s Matt Walls flew into the crowd.
The BBC reportsthat this year a new 1.4 meter high border was built around the track at a cost of £250,000. It was only used for the second time, but even that didn’t stop the cyclists from throwing themselves into the stands.
The event organizers stopped the event after the accident and canceled the rest of the evening’s races.
– We are working closely with all parties to investigate the accident and take the necessary measures.
