Stéphane Troussel, president of the Seine-Saint-Denis department, announced that he had proposed to Paris 2024 the candidacy of Oumar Diemé as a torchbearer during the passage of the Olympic Flame in Seine-Saint-Denis on July 25 and 26, 2024 “While the Olympic Torch Relay is an essential tradition of the Games, the Seine-Saint-Denis department wishes to take advantage of this unique opportunity to highlight the faces who make and have made the France of today today. The choice of Oumar Diemé, former Senegalese rifleman, would thus contribute to essential work of memory as Aissata Seck has undertaken with determination with her fights as president of the association for the memory of Senegalese riflemen. This work makes it possible to build a common, universal future, where everyone has their place,” writes Stéphane Troussel in a press release. “By recognizing the role of the riflemen of the battalions of the former French colonies in the defense of our country, we want to salute their commitment that has been forgotten for too long and wish to honor their memory. Because we are convinced that this is how we will build a common future for all the children of France whatever their histories and origins,” we can also read in the press release.
