Para weightlifting at the 2024 Paralympic Games: rules, classification of disabilities… Info and program

Para weightlifting at the 2024 Paralympic Games rules classification of

Para weightlifting is one of the only events without classification by disability.

The para weightlifting event entered the Paralympic Games program in 1964, but has evolved over time. Since 1984 and the Los Angeles Games, it has been a bench press competition, or powerliftingwhich awaits the competitors. The women’s event made its debut at the Games in 2000 in Sydney.

Weightlifting at the Paralympic Games is open to all competitors with a functional limitation in the lower limbs or hips that prevents them from lifting a barbell standing up. The bench press is performed on a bench in a lying position, and as in a classic weightlifting competition, the athlete chooses the weight they want to lift. They have three attempts to lift the greatest possible weight, and can only increase the weight as the attempts progress. The athlete who lifts the greatest weight wins the event. Each attempt is observed by three judges, who validate or not the attempt of the athlete who must lower the bar to chest level then raise it above them with their arms straight and elbows locked.

Para weightlifting is one of the few events that does not have a classification based on the athletes’ disability. The latter are divided into 10 weight categories, for both men and women.
