The master of a tanker, flagged in Bangladesh, has been sentenced to 50 days’ fines since the vessel discharged palm oil outside Skanör-Falsterbo.
The release occurred in connection with the ship cleaning its tanks and was discovered last Monday by the Coast Guard’s surveillance flight. It was eight square kilometers in size, equivalent to 1,200 football pitches, the authority writes in a press release.
According to international regulations, it is permitted to release palm oil in connection with tank cleaning as long as it is done in accordance with certain regulations. But in this case the ship violated all of them.
The discharge could not be controlled, according to the Coast Guard.
The master’s daily fines amounted to SEK 37,000.
