The violence reportedly started when Israeli soldiers entered a Palestinian refugee camp in Jenin on Thursday morning.
Israel’s army claims to have carried out an operation to arrest militant Islamists and stop a terrorist attack in Jenin. A total of ten Palestinians are said to have been killed during Thursday, making the day the bloodiest in two decades.
Hundreds of mourners took to the streets of Jenin and fresh clashes between the Israeli military and Palestinians took place throughout the day.
In response to the military’s action, the Palestinian Authority announced that it was suspending its cooperation with Israel on security in the West Bank.
Maintains order
The Palestinian Authority’s security forces have long cooperated with Israel in their efforts to maintain order in the PA-controlled areas of the Israeli-occupied West Bank. PA has also had intelligence cooperation with the American intelligence organization CIA. It is not the first time PA has canceled the collaboration, the last time it happened in 2020.
The terror-classified organization Hamas also threatened consequences as a result of the military operation in Jenin. On Thursday night, two rockets were fired from Hamas-controlled Gaza, according to Israel’s military. Both rockets are said to have been shot down. No one has yet claimed responsibility for the rocket fire.
