In the Western world, Musharraf is perhaps best remembered for leading Pakistan in connection with the major terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, referred to in the United States as the “9/11” attacks, in 2001.
Musharraf took power in a coup in 1999, and was president from mid-2001 to August 2008.
Died in Dubai
Even later, he has been controversial, and in 2019 was even sentenced to death for treason. However, that sentence was overturned.
He is reported to have suffered from poor health in recent years. He is said to have died in a hospital in the emirate of Dubai.
