Authorities blocked the site after the online encyclopedia failed to remove content the country considers blasphemy, or blasphemy.

The telecoms authority PTA had given Wikipedia an ultimatum it believed the service had failed to live up to, with a spokesperson announcing that “they will remain blocked until they remove all objectionable material”.

But on Monday evening, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif put his foot down and ordered the blockade to be lifted immediately.

A committee appointed by the government had then concluded that the censorship brought with it “unintended negative consequences that are greater than the benefits”.

The country has previously temporarily shut down media giants such as Facebook and YouTube.
