Over 800 injured in earthquake in Iran

At least three people have been killed and hundreds injured in a strong earthquake in northern Iran. The material damage is extensive, after an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9.

The quake struck on Saturday evening near the border with Turkey, near the town of Khoy in West Azarbaijan province, according to the Seismological Center of the University of Tehran.

Provincial governor Mohammad Sadegh Motamedian told state news agency Irna that more than 800 people had been injured, a sharp revision from the previous figure of 580 injured.

Iran is located in an area of ​​high seismic activity due to its location at the boundaries of several major continental plates. On 18 January, hundreds of people were injured in another earthquake in the same area.
