Over 70 dead after monsoon rains in India

In the state of Himachal Pradesh, rescue workers struggle to rescue people trapped under mud and rubble.

The heavy monsoon rains have triggered landslides and floods that have washed away roads and washed away entire buildings.

The India Meteorological Department, which expects the downpours to continue for the next few days, has put the state on high alert.

Roads still blocked

Hundreds of roads remain blocked and in the central town of Shimla, schools have been forced to close.

Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, states that over 2,000 people have been rescued with the help of helicopters and speedboats.

The infrastructure destroyed by this year’s monsoon rains will take a year to rebuild, Sukhu told The Press Trust of India news agency.

It is a big challenge, he says.
