Over 40-year-old artwork destroyed – Karlshamn parish exposed to copper theft

The copper theft is believed to have taken place on the night between Saturday and Sunday. In total, seven out of ten copper bows were stolen.

– It is of course very sad, this cannot be recreated because the artist is no longer alive, says Per-Olof Clarin.

The sanctuary was created by Helle Dahlberg and inaugurated in 1980. Previously, the artwork was in central Karlshamn, but was moved in 2018 to Hvilan’s cemetery.

Previous attempts

It is not the first time that copper thieves have shown an interest in the Sanctuary. About a month ago, Per-Olof Clarin discovered an attempted theft.

– They managed to get some off, but didn’t take it with them. So we had taken it in to repair and made new special screws for it, but we never had time to put it back.

Unclear future

At present, it is not clear whether the artwork will be repaired or whether the congregation will replace it with something else.

– Even if we would like to repair it, we have no drawings of how these arches should look, so it is very difficult, says Per-Olof Clarin.

The congregation has reported the theft to the police and hopes to find out what happened to the bows.

– We are grateful if there is a witness who gets in touch, they can do that to us at the Karlshamn parish or the police, of course, concludes Per-Olof Clarin.
