Over 30 dead after gas explosion at grill restaurant

At least 31 people have died in connection with an explosion at a barbecue restaurant in the city of Yinchuan in northwestern China, the state news agency New China (Xinhua) reports.

The accident must have been caused by a gas explosion, according to the news agency. Another seven injured people are being treated, one of whom is in a critical condition.

The explosion occurred on Wednesday evening in a residential area in the central parts of Yinchuan, which is the capital of Ningxia region.

Chinese President Xi Jinping is demanding a safety review after the explosion and that the injured receive the best possible care, New China reports.

The rescue operation ended early Thursday morning and investigators are working to investigate the cause of the explosion, state authorities say.
