At least 22 people have been killed and seven others seriously injured after a bus in northern India ran off the road and crashed into a ravine on Sunday.

The bus, with 29 passengers plus one driver, was on its way to the holy Hindu pilgrimage destination Yamunotri in the state of Uttarakhand when the accident occurred.

About 150,000 people are killed every year in traffic accidents in India according to the government.

The main factors behind the high number of deaths are speeding and low use of seat belts.
