22 cats have had to be rescued from the cold in Kalix after someone or a few abandoned them outdoors, local media reports.
Camilla Zerpe Karlsson, chairman of the association Kattakuten in Norrbotten, tells NSD that she has never experienced anything like this. One of the cats had frozen with its legs on a branch and others in the ice.
The cats are in many cases hypothermic, some have received emergency veterinary care and at least two have died.
– We went to the vet immediately after picking up the cat from our fantastic helper. It was just skin and bones plus it had no fur on its belly or hind legs, says Camilla Zerpe Karlsson to NSD.
– There is no doubt that the cats are dumped. It is a complete disaster, she tells SVT Nyheter Norrbotten.
The County Administrative Board in Norrbotten asks people living within two kilometers of the center of Kalix to keep their cats indoors:
“This is to avoid the risk of the wrong cats being taken into care,” writes the county administrative board.
