At least 77 people have died and upwards of 14,500 houses have been destroyed by heavy downpours in Sudan.

This year’s rainy season began already in May, against the normal September, and has been unusually strong. The UN’s coordinating body OCHA warned on Monday that the death toll would rise further and that over 136,000 people were then homeless as a result of the floods. Worst affected are the countryside around the capital Khartoum.

It is the third year in a row that Sudan has been hit by severe floods. Last year over 80 people died when masses of water drowned villages throughout the country and in 2020 a three-month state of emergency was declared when over 100 people died and over 100,000 homes were destroyed.
