Remember the big rat scene in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade? This nerve-wracking film experience will soon be repeated. For Nosferatu, the remake of horror classic of the same namedirector Robert Eggers gathered a considerable number of rodents in front of the camera.
As Entertainment Weekly reports, while filming a particularly disgusting scene from Nosferatu 2,000 real rats for use. Imagine a dark stone vault in which flames blaze: Here, Willem Dafoe as Professor Albin Eberhart von Franz encounters an entire army of rats that are scurrying wildly through the area.

Where many modern film productions rely on digital effects, animatronic models and other tricks for such an act of disgust, Eggers takes no prisoners and brings his cast into one Extreme situation like no other: “This sequence featured real flames as well as 2,000 real rats”says the director in the interview.

Dafoe, who worked with Eggers on the similarly extreme films The Lighthouse and The Northman, was one of the many rats on set apparently far less impressedthan you might think. “It was a challenge, but also very fun”Eggers remembers the Nosferatu shoot.
In addition to Dafoe, Nosferatu also stars Lily-Rose Depp as Ellen Hutter, Nicholas Hoult as Thomas Hutter and Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Friedrich Harding. Bill Skarsgård takes on the role of the eponymous vampire, who already caused fear and terror in Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau’s original from 1922: Count Orlok.
Vampire horror: When does the Nosferatu remake start in cinemas?
Nosferatu will be released in the USA on December 25, 2024. There is no specific start date yet set in this country. We assume that vampire horror will soon conquer the big screen in Germany.
