Over 100 dead in landslides in Ethiopia

The landslide occurred after heavy downpours in the mountainous region in a remote part of Ethiopia. Pictures from the area show people using their bare hands to dig through the earth masses for survivors.

The death toll has risen as the rescue work has progressed. During Tuesday, the number was written up to 146, reports the news agency AP. The number of dead is feared to be higher than that.

Many of the victims were buried as rescue workers scoured the steep terrain for survivors of an earlier landslide that occurred over the weekend.

Southern Ethiopia has been hit by floods after heavy seasonal rains in the spring. Thousands of residents have been forced to relocate. The rainfall has caused major damage to infrastructure and crops.
