The pushers
Eric Debray, Rueil-Malmaison (Hauts-de-Seine)
Three of our most cultured politicians act as a foil, including within their own camp: Jean-Luc Mélenchon, Eric Zemmour and Emmanuel Macron. Irony of history: these three men participated in the RN push. Mélenchon, by threatening the Republic, took back the place occupied by the name “Le Pen” in the imagination of the French, through the fear that it now provokes. Zemmour, through his truly racist remarks, refocused Marine Le Pen. Macron, for his part, abused electoral tactics by making numerous LR rallies in his first term and by declaring Marine Le Pen as opponent No. 1. (Can we “stand in the way” when we ourselves become a foil?L’Express of June 20.)
Macron betrayed us!
Claude Majeur, Divonne-les-Bains (Ain)
Macron betrayed us. I thought I was voting for a European election. But the president, after having had the word “Europe” on his lips in all his interventions, reduced it to a national election. What contempt for the people who voted! (Republican arc: despite MacronL’Express of June 20.)
Do not want anymore…
Jean-Michel Bénard, Châtillon (Hauts-de-Seine)
I don’t want to vote on the left because of LFI and its excesses. I don’t want to vote on the right because of the RN and its inconsistencies. I no longer want to vote by default for President Goudurix’s party, which only leaves us the choice between him, Charybdis and Scylla. I don’t want to not vote, otherwise it would be difficult to complain about the result whatever it may be; people fought for the right to vote. Will something new, authentic and sincere emerge before June 30, someone with a sense of the State, of Europe and of the common good, while being realistic? I hope so… (Emmanuel Macron, the July scenariosL’Express of June 13.)
Lessons from Operation Tiger
Patrick Guerisse, Waterloo (Belgium)
I appreciated your article on Operation Tiger, an exercise to prepare for the Normandy landings. One of the causes of the tragedy was in fact the lack of radio communication between the British and Americans, but lessons were learned from these errors. On June 6, radio frequencies were unified, life jackets adapted to the soldiers’ heavy equipment and boats for recovering men who had fallen into the water were provided. (Operation Tiger: the other landingL’Express of June 6.)
Pension indexation
Bernard Lipp, Dole (Jura)
For months I have supported Antoine Foucher’s proposals, consisting of de-indexing the pensions of the wealthiest – of which I am one. In a pay-as-you-go system, our pensions are paid through the contributions of current employees and not through the old contributions of retirees. However, the average level of pensions is higher than the level of salaries. As for the weight of the employee contribution, it has increased in forty years from 15 to 30% of salaries! This proposal would be very effective in achieving reductions in our excessive public spending, which partly explains the regime crisis we are experiencing. (Antoine Foucher: “Breaking down the taboo of de-indexing pensions”L’Express of June 6.)
New Caledonia must remain French
Jean-Louis Coquillon, Vitré (Ille-et-Vilaine)
There reigns in New Caledonia an insurrectional climate led by a minority of rioters who maintain the chaos. However, three successive referendums have confirmed the desire of Caledonians to remain in the French Republic. This archipelago represents an economic, industrial and strategic challenge for France. There is therefore no question of it withdrawing from this region of the globe, which would attract the desire of other powers in the region, notably Australia and China. (New Caledonia: Macron wrote a letter to the inhabitants of the archipelagoon Lexpress.fr)
