To protect user privacy, Siri processes data on the user’s device whenever possible. Thus, personalized experiences can be offered without personal information being transferred to Apple servers and analyzed. When the user speaks to or writes to Siri, the user’s request is processed within the device as much as possible.
For example, when the user asks Siri to read unread messages or when Siri makes suggestions through widgets and Siri search, the data processing occurs on the user’s device. The content of the messages is not transferred to Apple servers because it is not necessary to fulfill the request. On devices with the required features, audio data regarding the user’s requests is processed entirely within the device using the Neural Engine, unless the user chooses to share the data with Apple.
Although Apple tries to process as much data as possible within the device, some features may require real-time information from Apple servers. In such cases, Siri uses as little data as possible to give accurate results. Siri searches and requests are not associated with your Apple Account.
Instead of linking data to a user’s identity through their Apple Account or phone number, a random identifier — a long string of letters and numbers associated with a single device — is used to track data as it is processed.
We think this process is unique among digital assistants used today. To help improve Siri, Apple does not store audio recordings of Siri interactions without the user explicitly agreeing to enable the feature. Even if the user has agreed to the storage of these records, they are used solely for the purpose of improving Siri. Users can disable this feature whenever they want.
