“Our house looked like a museum”

Our house looked like a museum

He is the bird of paradise among the stuffy art snobs: Cash for Rares dealer Fabian Kahl is really well received by the fans. Despite – or perhaps because of – his striking look, the young Thuringian has crept into the hearts of young and old. But how does the TV star actually live privately? We investigated.

Young, alternative, colorful: Fabian Kahl has been at Bares for Rares since hour 1

Bares for Rares has been on TV since 2013, and one person has been there since the beginning: antique dealer Fabian Kahl. The dealer stands out among his colleagues like a sore thumb. Instead of being dignified and elegant, Kahl prefers to present himself as colorful, alternative and unusual. He used to rock an androgynous goth look with a raven black mane, now here he is colorful and extravagant therefore.

One detail is immediately noticeable when looking: the antique professional looks extremely young next to his co-stars. It’s hard to believe: Even though Kahl has been on the ZDF hit for 10 years, he’s only 33 years old. He has been proving since hour 1 that the full professional can negotiate tough despite his young age. Here he pulls it off most expensive picture in show history under the nail:

This is how Kahl came to work for Rares: ZDF discovered him by chance

Fabian Kahl was only in his early 20s when he started working for Rares. Was he already dreaming of a big TV career back then? Hardly. At that time, Kahl was still running a gallery and was fully focused on his job. The jump onto TV was a happy coincidence: a ZDF team discovered the eye-catching youngster at a flea market in Leipzig and promptly invited him to a casting. The rest, as they say, is history.

Kahl’s striking look immediately made him one of Bares’ most recognizable faces for Rares. Due to the ongoing success of the show, there is still no end in sight. The bird of paradise is also really well received by the rest of the cast. Horst Lichter thinks highly of him, as he reveals in a backstage video: “Fabian is a lovely man who I like very much. I would even adopt him.”

Modernity meets tradition: Fabian Kahl lives in a castle

His father Holger Kahl was already successful as an antiques and coin dealer – his love for old things was omnipresent in his childhood. In a radio interview with Bremen Zwei, Kahl revealed that his family has always collected old things: “Our house looked like a museum.” Later, the Kahls even bought a baroque palace and renovated it themselves over many years. Here are the impressions of a visitor:
