The 95th Academy Awards unveiled all of its nominations on January 24, 2023. The Academy had also specified that 301 films were eligible for the Oscars. Voters had until January 17 to choose the finalists in each category, before the nominations were announced a week later.
Each year, France sends one of its films to compete for the Oscar for Best International Film. These are retained, or not, among the five nominated. For the 95th ceremony, it is Saint Omer, film by Alice Diop, who had been chosen to represent France at the 2023 Oscars. This had already won the Silver Lion at the last Venice Film Festival. On January 24, 2023, however, we learned that the film had not been selected as a finalist for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar category. There is therefore no French film candidate for the Oscars this year.
