The political leaders of the member states negotiate on the candidate they will put forward to lead the Commission.
Prime minister Petteri Orpon (co.) according to him, so far nothing has come across that would prevent him Ursula von der Leyen election for the second term as head of the EU Commission. Orpo commented on the issue when he arrived at the preparatory meeting of the political leaders of the EU countries in Brussels.
EU leaders will meet on Monday at a dinner to hold preliminary discussions on the distribution of the top jobs in the Union. The European Parliament still has to approve the choice in its vote.
Politico says that at the moment there seems to be a consensus on von der Leyen’s continued term as head of the EU Commission.
The political leaders of the EU countries will also gather next week for the actual summit, when the official nominations are to take place. Orpo hoped that a preliminary agreement on the matter would be reached already today at the preparatory meeting.
In addition to the President of the Commission, shared EU leadership positions include, for example, the President of the European Council, the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, and the President of the Parliament.
