  • Orbán in China: “Peace Mission”

    Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has landed in China, a visit he himself calls “peace mission 3.0”.

    The trip to Beijing follows two surprise visits to Russia and Ukraine in the past week, carried out as soon as Hungary took over the presidency of the EU’s Council of Ministers. However, the visit to Moscow has been heavily criticized by EU leaders.

    On Monday, Orbán will have a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

    There is a fire in a row of terraced houses in Flacksta in Eskilstuna, writes Ekuriren.

    The alarm came at 00:15.

    The emergency services have a large effort at the scene.

    – We received information that there was a fire in a carport. By the time we arrived, it had spread to the townhouse itself as well. So we have a fully developed fire in a row of townhouses consisting of five apartments, says the duty officer of the rescue service, Henrik Dewon-Thorén, to Ekuriren.

  • Details: Top Democrats want Biden to drop out

    At least five leading Democratic members of the House of Representatives think that Biden should run in his re-election campaign, US media reports.

    Before election night, 30,000 extra police officers had been called in to keep order on the streets.

    Britain’s newly appointed Foreign Minister David Lammy traveled to Sweden on Sunday.

    In Stockholm, the new foreign minister met his Swedish counterpart, Tobias Billström (M). At the meeting, the ministers discussed, among other things, defense cooperation and support for Ukraine.

    “After my conversation with Foreign Minister Lammy, I am convinced that the conditions for continuing to deepen and develop cooperation with Great Britain are very good,” says Tobias Billström in a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

    David Lammy, who previously held ministerial posts in both Tony Blair’s and Gordon Brown’s governments, replaced conservative David Cameron as foreign secretary after Labour’s landslide victory in the UK general election on Friday.

  • Police action – suspected serious crime

    A police operation is underway in Bagarmossen in southern Stockholm.

    According to Aftonbladet’s information, there has been a shooting, but no one is said to have been injured.

    A forest area has been cordoned off.

  • Swedish Nobel laureate dead

    Swedish Nobel laureate Bengt Samuelsson is dead, his relatives confirm to Aftonbladet. He lived to be 90 years old.

    He died on Sunday after a long illness.

    In 1982, Bengt Samuelsson received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine together with Sune Bergström and the Briton John R. Vane – for discoveries concerning prostaglandins and related substances.

    He has also been rector of Karolinska Institutet.

  • Heavy fire in Västerås

    There is a fire in the terrain at Erikslund in Västerås, near a shopping centre.

    The alarm came in shortly before 8 p.m.

    For a while there was a high risk of spreading, but by 9 p.m. the fire was under control.

    – The emergency services have set a forecast of a few hours, says the police officer on duty.

    There are no reports of any injuries.

  • Polling stations close in France

    At 8 p.m., polling stations closed in the second round of the French parliamentary elections.

    According to the polling station survey, the left-wing alliance NFP is the largest.

    Armed police patrol in groups in Paris – over thousands of extra officers have been called in. Several voters tell TT that they fear violence in the wake of the polarized French election.

    In Paris, police officers walk in groups of three or four with their weapons visible. People on the streets shout different variations of “voter”, a call to vote, according to TT’s broadcaster.

    According to French newspapers, several shops in the inner city have installed wooden boards to protect their shop windows for fear of riots when the election results are announced on Sunday evening.

    — I hope that hate does not win. They will set fire to everything if the RN wins, says a man in his 60s outside a polling station in the capital’s ninth district.

  • Missing man found dead

    The 75-year-old man who had gone missing in Hudiksvall has been found dead, the police write on their website.

    The man disappeared from a nursing home on Saturday afternoon. A large search effort was launched with, among others, the Home Guard.

    Police suspect no crime in connection with the death. Next of kin have been notified.

    Good question Bengt! And it’s probably not something I can answer, but a big difference between Sweden and the USA is that election day here is always a holiday, which at least makes it possible for more people to vote without having to take time off (if you don’t vote early then).
