Orbán: Europe must change, the situation is the most serious in the history of the Union | News in brief

Orban Europe must change the situation is the most serious

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán wants to make the EU “great again”.

Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orbán according to Europe’s current situation is the most serious in its history.

According to Orbán, the reason for this is the war in Ukraine, the escalation of the crisis in the Middle East and the “immigrant crisis”, which, according to Orbán, can destroy the EU’s Schengen system, i.e. free movement.

– The EU must change, and the Presidency (Hungary) wants to be the catalyst for this change, he said.

Orbán spoke today at the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

He criticizes the EU’s green transition, which according to him weakens competitiveness due to energy prices and regulation. Orbán emphasizes that the EU has fallen behind in digital technology and that the brain drain has increased. He proposes less regulation and strengthening the common market.

According to Orbán, the migrant situation is burdensome, especially at the EU’s external borders. Orbán proposes that migrants seeking EU territory would be processed outside the EU.

– The rest is an illusion, Orbán said to applause.

He also proposes regular meetings to discuss free movement within the EU.

He also emphasized the acceleration of the integration of the Western Balkans and suggested that Bulgaria and Romania be fully integrated into the Schengen area by the end of the year.

Finished his speech “let’s make Europe great again”.

After Orbán’s speech, the anti-fascist song Bella Ciao echoed in the hall, according to the news agency AFP.

President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola restrained the singers and stated that “These are not Eurovision”.

Hungary took the EU presidency in July, but Orbán has undermined the EU’s unity. He started negotiations with Ukraine, Russia and China without the approval of the EU countries and is trying to block EU aid to Ukraine. President of the EU Commission Ursula von der Leyen responded by boycotting Hungarian meetings. Orbán’s program presentation has been postponed twice.
