Orange warning from SMHI: “Do not go out”

SMHI has upgraded its weather warning from yellow to orange over a large part of Jämtland county. There may be very strong gusts of wind or storms during Friday evening and Saturday night.
– It is a serious warning and you should not go out, warns TV4 News meteorologist Madeleine Westin.

The warning from SMHI takes effect from 17:00 this afternoon and lasts until Saturday morning at 05:00 Saturday morning. It is a serious warning that should definitely be taken seriously, according to TV4 Nyheternas meteorologist Madeleine Westin. Winds as strong as 30 meters per second can occur.

– The winds will culminate around midnight and then it could be hurricane villages that move in over land, she says.

Normally, these strong winds mostly occur in the mountain areas, but now they also come over densely built-up areas, which of course can create major problems.

Avoid being outside

SMHI recommends that you avoid going out into traffic unnecessarily, as it can be difficult to get there due to fallen trees and branches. There may also be delays and canceled departures in public transport.

Power outages and disturbances in telecommunications networks are also likely in areas with overhead power lines and you should not go near downed power lines.

There is a risk of personal injury due to flying objects, so you should anchor loose objects well, recommends SMHI. In addition, major damage can occur to forests and one should avoid staying there.

– Actually, you should avoid being outside at all when it is blowing this strongly, if you have the opportunity, it is perhaps a good idea to bring the children home from preschool in good time before the warning starts at 5:00 p.m., says TV4 Nyhetern’s meteorologist Madeleine Westin.

Electricity companies prepare for storm winds

According to P4 Jamtland Both Jämtkraft and Eon are on high alert, as the strong winds can lead to fallen trees and power outages. Eon deploys extra staff, extra machines and extra electricity during the weekend, says Lena Berglund, regional manager at the company.
